From Auditor to Entrepreneur: Building My Bookkeeping Business

A real look at transitioning from audit to entrepreneurship, and what it actually takes to build a bookkeeping business from the ground up.

Everything looked right on paper.

I was working in audit. Stable path. Clear progression.

But it didn’t feel aligned.

Not because the work didn’t matter…
but because it didn’t feel like mine.

That’s where this really started.

The Audit Phase: What It Taught Me

Audit gave me a strong foundation.

I learned how to:

  • Understand financial systems at a deep level

  • Spot inefficiencies and risks

  • Think critically about numbers, not just record them

But it also showed me something important.

Most businesses don’t fail because they lack effort.
They fail because they’re making decisions without clear numbers.
They struggle because they don’t fully understand their numbers.

That realization stuck with me.

The Shift: Wanting More Control

Over time, I started thinking differently.

I didn’t just want to review businesses.
I wanted to help build them.

I wanted to work directly with business owners.
To be in the process, not just looking back at it.

That’s when the idea of starting my own bookkeeping business became real.

Not just as a side thought.
But as a direction.

Taking the Leap

Starting wasn’t some big, perfect moment.

It was a decision.
No guarantees. No clear roadmap. Just a direction I decided to commit to.

A decision to:

  • Bet on my skills

  • Learn what I didn’t know yet

  • Build something that aligned with how I wanted to work

There were a lot of unknowns.

Pricing. Systems. Finding clients. Structuring services.

But clarity doesn’t come before action.
It comes from it.

Building Rebirth the Books

Rebirth the Books wasn’t built just to manage books.

It was built to help business owners actually understand their numbers…
so they can make better decisions, grow with confidence, and stop guessing.

That meant focusing on:

  • Clean, reliable books

  • Clear financial insights

  • Strategic support through advisory and CFO services

Because numbers alone don’t build businesses.
Understanding them does.

What I’ve Learned So Far

The biggest lessons haven’t been technical.

They’ve been about mindset.

  • You don’t need everything figured out to start

  • Consistency matters more than intensity

  • Building something of your own forces growth

And most importantly:

There’s a difference between doing work… and building something that matters to you.

Clarity doesn’t come before action. It comes from it.

Closing

This is still the early part of the journey.

But if there’s one thing I know for sure:

Choosing to build something of your own changes how you see everything.

If you’re in that transition phase right now, questioning your next move…

You’re probably closer than you think.

If you’re a business owner trying to get clarity on your numbers…
or thinking about building something of your own…

That’s exactly the space I work in.
